Belgrade Home in Need
Challenge
A New homeowner called in need of an expert to look at their gutters. They asked if we do a free consolation. "OF course! We always give a free no obligation consultation," I said.
Once our expert Jason, arrived at the scheduled time, the husband and the wife were standing outside on the porch waiting to greet me. As I introduced myself, they showed great gratitude to me for coming out to investigate the issues. They first mentioned that they had just purchased the home late last fall. While explaining the issue they had with snow and ice melting on the front porch which caused ice buildup. The result of this was they had to dismantle their storm door to be able to get in and out of the house. At first glance, it looked to the homeowners as if the gutters were leaking with all ice buildup by the door. Jason, the Gutter Design Specialist, climbed up on the roof to investigate what was going on.
After just a few minutes of looking around, his investigation found some major problem areas. The low-pitched roof was cut at the very edge of the roof line. There was an old Asphalt rolled roof, that was not sealed to the drip edge, as it should be. I quickly realized that this was not a gutter issue at all, it was a roofing problem. Water was following and backing up on top of the drip edge and getting underneath the rolled shingle. In turn this was saturating the roof decking and leaking into the soffits. I looked at the soffit and noticed that the soffits were sloped back towards the house and siding. This allowed all the melting water from the snow and ice to flow into the siding and the door, causing the Ice Dam that blockaded their Storm door.
Solution
I got the homeowners in contact with a roofing company we work with. And also suggested an easy fix they could do to slow the problem down until they can get the roof repaired properly.
Once the roof is repaired, we can install proper gutters on your home to help keep water flowing away from your doors and foundation. Here at Gutter Shutter, we want to ensure your home is properly protected.
