Water Problems in Atwater MN
Challenge
Gwen called in to talk to someone about gutters. She is having an issue with water getting into her home on the west side. She called a landscaper to see about changing the landscape around the house to allow the water to better move away from her home. The first thing the landscaper said is to get a section of gutter on the house to eliminate the large amount of water coming into the area from the roof line.
The west side of Gwen's house is designed with a small retaining wall around the foundation of the home. Similar to a mot from the land to the house. Over the years the landscape and the concrete have settled, and she has a spot where the water now sits alongside her house in this mot. Over the course of all the rain we have had this year the water is starting to flow into her house. In this case currently the water from the roof flows down into this space and the water from her yard is flowing down into this space. The Big question is what the best way is to keep water out of this space and out of the home.
Solution
Here is the solution that has been advised to the homeowner to protect her home. The landscaper is going to install a drain system that runs along the foundation of the house. This will catch any water that comes in from the hill side and rain in that general area. They will also address the slope of the landscape to ensure that the water is flowing away from the house and into the French drain system. Along with that is a New Gutter system to catch the rainwater from the roof. the Gutter System lets us control where the large amount of water off the roof is going. The fastest fix to this is to eliminate half the water going to this area, with a new Gutter System in place. We will route the downspout out into the yard away from the problem section. This plan will also allow us to connect the downspout in the future into the drain system that will be installed by the landscaper. Stay tune for the Finish product.
